Qualified as a doctor in 1976, I have always had dual interests in Medicine and the Arts. Full of enthusiasm but lacking in creative talent caused me to choose the easier career of Surgery! However my interest in the Arts truly is life long and has led to a fascinating intertwining of the two. My surgical interests led me to heart surgery and within that the creative area of heart valve reconstruction. This is rather like sculpting with Human tissue with profound consequences. The use of drawing to teach, learn and communicate has been a corner stone in all of my work and play. The two pieces that you have are examples of that. The movie records a teaching moment within a cardiac operation, where using blood as ink I am able to demonstrate the complexities of the operation to visiting surgeons. The drawing is committing thoughts to paper in the process of designing new surgical solutions to complex anatomical problems.
